back off the bangs

We went back to Iowa for a wedding this weekend. I wasn't prepared for all the comments that I would be getting on my 'new-to-them' hairstyle, after all, everyone back home had seen it at a friend's birthday party in April, but perhaps the 'whiskey goggles' and fact the that it was a bonfire birthday had something to do with them not really 'seeing' the new do.

I had to laugh off many, many Pulp Fiction references to my hairstyle. Friends were on the sidelines of the dance floor gesturing the sideways 'V' fingers running across their eyeballs with a big smirk on their faces

(looking for a photo for this post, I see it totally didn't help that I wore a white blouse to the wedding...)

or the Cleopatra jokes, going on and on about 'how she was a man-eater' and (nudge, nudge) that 'perhaps I just might be one too'

or that I look more 'mature' (which, by the way, is not at all, a compliment, it's like saying, 'yes, I can see those crows feet much better with this hairstyle, you really outdid yourself this time!').

I've known most of these people since I was in high school, when my bangs were combed up, way up, like in I-had-a-barrette-in-my-hair-to-keep-it-up-like-this style. I loving referred to my own hairstyle as 'bubble bangs'.

(don't you love the back lighting on my hair, just the right touch in emphasising the 'bigness' of my do).

See, change is good.

Now back off the bangs.

Every time I get a haircut I get the same comment about it making me look more mature and more like a mom. I was also told that my new pants with huge thighs made me look more like a mom too. Why is it that being mature and being homely seem to mean the same thing? I love visiting you, you always make me laugh!

That is so funny! I love bangs. I think they are so cute. I don't have the right kinda face for them, but I do have those long ones that I can hide behind if need be.

I've had two hair cuts with bangs: one before baby, one after baby. Before baby I heard, "Wow, you look awesome! The bangs really highlight your cheekbones!" After baby it sounded more like, "I don't know. I guess its growing on me. You're so adventurous."
Seriously?!

agreed. Change is good. And for the record I like the bangs. They look good. So if I say they are good they MUST be. Right?

I dig your bangs!
Love the big hair though - I had that hair though, sadly, not quite the volume...though I tried! ;)

Oh Lord, this reminds me of when I turned 40. I went and paid a boatload of money for a new haircut, color, and bought a new curling iron and blow dryer. I walked through the front door and my daughter who was four at the time said in a loud voice, "You look beautiful mom, just like grandma". Enough said. LOL

Hilarious! Don't you love when people think they're paying you a compliment and it comes across as anything but?

I think it looks great, by the way.....though I have no clue what you looked like before (with exception, of course, to the bubble bangs). Lovely.

I like your bangs...totally not Pulp Fiction.

But, the bubble bangs, rocked, too. And, I know you've seen the new clip to create the "bump." See how trendy you are.

HAHA! Is that your high school picture? I remember having hair like that!

Well, you had to have big hair to keep up with this gigantic polka dots on your shirt!

You were still cute though and I'll bet you're rockin' those bangs.

I love the bangs. About every 2 years or so, I try out bangs and every 2 years, I hate them on me. But over time I forget and try it again. Wait, how long has it been..oops almost 2 years now...

Love the picture of your hair...I used to have really high hair too! Your pic makes me want to dig out some of mine!

Clearly everyone is just jealous.

That's what I tell myself when I get comments about my bangs - and I do get a lot of comments about my bangs...

Only a can or two of Aqua Net can create a hairstyle like that! I sooooo want to try bangs, but I keep stalling, I just get them "long" and then keep them off to the side. Which totally defeats the purpose.

Oh, those hair barettes were so cool. My Mom never wanted to buy me the big ones she wanted a small one on each side. I was a total dork! I love your blog name! Whenever I see it I must come over and say hi! So fun!

Two things. First, is that last picture really you? Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. I hope it's not and it's a joke. If it's real - wow.

Second, where is the picture of your current bangs? I'll have to search your site. (It's been a week since I've checked in.)

No wonder the ozone layer is disappearing at a rate of knots - look at all the hairspray that was used in the 80's!

That is a CLASSIC pic - luv it back lighting and all!!

My sister has this same haircut - I don't think anybody mentioned any of those to her I will have to ask. I think it is a really cute cut!

OMGosh people, I graduated high school in 1995, not the 80's! Is that another 'I'm looking mature' comment.

And yes, those that I can't reply to, it really is me. It's the perm that really provided the boost, not the hairspray.

I started off reading this post feeling a little perplexed. How can anybody think you look "*mature*"?!? Ugh... that's not coming out right. I do mean it in the kindest way... no, really. Whenever I'm at your site and see your little picture, I think, "How cute is she!" I might even be a little jealous. I definitely figured I was a good 10-15 years older than you, but I'm afraid your high school picture is giving you away. And the shirt. *THAT* is seriously funny!

Seriously, I miss bubble bangs. Or Coke bottle bangs as my SIL calls them. The good old days. I miss my big hair. Now I have to straighten it everyday because apparetnly big hair is out. Bummer.

I have a constant love/hate relationship with my bangs. I think I like them on me this week...who knows next week.

Yours look great!

I remember those high bangs. I loved them but my mom wouldn't let me wear my hair that way. I hindsight I suppose I should send her a thank you note.

I would wake up 30 minutes early before school just to fix my bangs. Curling iron? Check. Aqua net? Check.

Love it!

Ooh, Aquanet!!! Apparently we aren't the only ones who loved it. In one of the City offices for Upland, California there is a woman *named* Aquanetta.

I am not joking.

Well, if you want the photo of you with the bangs and the giant pink (sunglasses) elephant - let me know. I (for the record) love your do. And, I never thought of Pulp Fiction (more the lead singer of a ska band).
