I disgust myself

I disgust myself. I'm one of those mothers who does not allow their children to wear Mickey Mouse, Dora the Explorer, Winnie the Pooh,... anywhere, ever. If you've given me items with any of the above printed on them, I thank you still, but I either a) gave it to the Salvation Army or b) (cover your eyes, turn away from the screen if you don't want to know this about me) re-gifted it, which would only be if I deemed child and mother appropriate for said Dora the Explorer gear. (And people, you know you know who they are, they are those people that actually buy the mint colored Pooh diaper bags).

So far I've been able to gently nudge Henry in other directions, 'no not those, aren't the Target brand black little faux suede shoes so awesome!' but this weekend, he won. He walked right up, pulled these off the shelf and proclaimed them 'mine!'. They are everything I hate about children's clothing (in shoe form); Spiderman logos everywhere, plastic-ey Spiderman on both sides of the shoe (which he doesn't even know who Spiderman is) and worst yet, oh yes, they light up.

Isn't back-to-school shopping the best?

Shew! I thought I was the only momma who didn't let their child have a "character" shirt, pj's, toys...ugh! I am so with ya on that one. Someone actually gave me a Winnie the Pooh diaper bag for a baby shower...That was given to charity.
I won't even let Bella's first birthday party be taken over by any characters. Just how I roll :)
But I think the one pair of shoes is okay...and I bet he loves them! Especially b/c they light up!

First off... thanks so much for stopping by and mommy gossiping with me on my blog the other day. It's always fun to hear from you.

And... I almost was talked into a similar pair of shoes the other day. I know the temptation. Fortunately, he saw another pair at the last minute and we averted the danger.

But, I do have to say that my son did turn into Leo the Ninja Turtle for 2 years. I wrote an entire post about that several months ago. My hubbie about took him to a shrink. People still call him Leo.

Yuck! I am so with you... can't stand the character stuff, except on underwear, where I am the only one who sees them. Avery is soooo attached to her Strawberry Shortcake, hot pink backpack. Drives me crazy...

If he's going to go commercial, at least he picked an awesome character like Spiderman. Do the shoes give him "Spidey Sense"?

BTW...still laughing at the mint green pooh bag. hilarious!

I so agree with you, and was militant about it with my first, but have relaxed a bit with the second - I am very choosy and make sure that they aren't too obnoxious, nor are the colors too crazy.

I actually think the shoes annoy me more, so I haven't given in to that one!

Yesss, well try having those times FOUR (indoor & outdoor shows times twins), for the past two years with a little American Chopper and Transformers thrown in and then maybe, MAYBE, you'll feel my pain. (:

ha ha ha - I have to say that we all get stuck with our kids liking something like that sooner or later. Alex loves Thomas the Train and has ONE t-shirt with the characters on it - and his new favorite, thomas underwear. I figured if it helps with the potty training, I can live with it.

hate the pooh diaper bags.

I'm just hoping avery isn't into princess-everything. blah.

I also HATE the Pooh diaper bags as well as the high chair, pack & play, swing, car seat, stroller....you name it, I hate it. Graycen actually got a Tigger & Friends shirt for her birthday and she got so excited when she opened it and said "ohhhh!!! tigga and dawby" How can i say no to that? I just don't buy it myself.

I had the exact same experience at Target last weekend. Girl went for the Disney princesses. Really, there wasn't much else. I was disappointed. I like to avoid the licensed products. Anyway, I got cut a break. Low and behold there was a pair of brown suede velcro cutsie-tennies. I pulled the same trick you did. I said, "Hey, look at how cute THESE are!" Only our result was different than yours. The girl bought it. She dropped the Disney shoes lickity split, and we got the brown flowered ones!

Oh my goodness we are the same person!!

I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE character stuff! Did I mention that I HATE it!! I totally return EVERYTHING that we are given with *Crap* on it!!

Thanks for the reminder not to go to Target for new shoes for Cade. :)

Hoping you are coping!

Hey I totally hear you. They are super hideous shoes.

I have given so many gifts away over the last few years. I just can't put my kids in those clothes.

My limit is underwear and maybe pj's but only if it is a tasteful splash of character rather than appearing like mockey mouse threw up on their PJ's.

I gave up that fight a long time ago. My compromise is that we mostly just get pajamas and shoes with characters, but not many clothes. My daughters is just so darn excited to be wearing Hello Kitty or Dora that I decided her happiness was more important than my fixation. But diaper bags? No frickin way.

Oh my gosh--I am the same way! I hate characters on shirts--Dino saw some CARS shoes but thankfully not in his size ;)
And I too give away/regift any clothes we get with characters. My mom is ALWAYS sending us spiderman/superman/superblahblah stuff. Someday my boys will find out....

just another reason i keep coming back here... you nailed it... and then the moment comes when you give in... i've made it with B although he is sporting shirts this year i'm not thrilled about... but he's 7 and they don't have characters... just 80's style the stuff i thought i left behind :)... i know my little C is going to take me for a ride with this... a battle in my future i am sure...

Haaa ha ha ha!
I am a new reader and I can tell immediately that we are going to get along well. My son has those ugly shoes too. Ick - the Spiderman stuff, the wild print, the lights. But they make him smile. And they were about $3 on clearance and he's growing so fast I can't keep up.

I look forward to reading more.

I was crossing my fingers for "they light up". Thank baby Jesus they didn't have them in my sons size, or we'd own a pair too.
